Why an Online Book?

Everyday is an education for the small, dedicated group of individuals who make up The Online Book Company. That’s because the potential of our venture continues to exceed our expectations daily – all thanks to the creativity of our online ‘authors’.

They are forever raising the bar with their bright ideas and off-the-wall requests for new and different ways of using this extraordinarily versatile, interactive medium.

It really pushes us to find new and different ways to achieve their online book vision:  for fundraising, committing the past to life with ‘leaving’ books, promoting knowledge and sharing memories, bringing people together with photos, videos, well-chosen words and fond reminiscences.

In the process, we believe we have been the first to create a database driven, fully interruptive and searchable online book. Simply by searching for a name in one of our books, readers can interact with it – to leave comments and photos or set up a celebration page.

Similarly, we were the first to devise a special retirement book which was audio assisted, allowing visually impaired people to set their computers to read individual messages out loud. Of course, the technology can be adapted for Birthdays, Anniversaries and so much more.

In creating our growing online library, the inspiration comes from all directions – charities, historians, churches, cathedrals, the armed forces, college and university alumni and all kinds of inspired individuals who are eager to find an online publishing medium that will put their ideas, thoughts and memories onto a global stage.

About us; Here’s how our story started:

The idea behind the venture that was eventually to become The Online Book Company was born of our founders, friends, Jonathan and Hugh, losing their brothers. Keen to keep the memories of their loved ones alive, they realised that this very human need would be shared by others the world over, and so the concept behind our initial business, Friends and Relations, was born.

Making the most of emerging technology, Jonathan and Hugh came up with a way of creating individually-dedicated online sanctuaries, far removed from the bustle and noise of social media platforms. Stories, photos and videos could be added, shared and commented on, milestones remembered and celebrated, and feelings expressed. Time and again, family members and friends, no matter where in the world they were, could turn to these online books for solace and find comfort in actively keeping memories alive.

Some of Friends and Relations’ early clients suggested that it would be good if the books could be used for a wider good. Their desire to make a difference, offering the opportunity for people visiting their loved ones’ books to make a donation to a charity or organisation that had meant a lot to the person being remembered, saw Friends and Relations evolve into The Online Book Company.

Today, our unique, interactive online books serve charities, businesses and other organisations: promoting causes, fundraising, recognising donors and legators, and celebrating supporters and service. But their original purpose – a means for people to connect with one another, tell their stories and honour individuals – remains very much at the heart of the enterprise.
