I have emailed Colonel Powell’s obituary to my grandson Fergus before he goes to Eton for his first term. Nothing he learns there will be of greater value than this.
I was fortunate enough to serve under General Shan Hackett in 7th Armoured Brigade (I think – it’s a long time ago) in Germany in 1956 and learnt more about soldiering from him while standing to attention during a fearsome reprimand than I did during eighteen months at Sandhurst! When it was over he said “Sit down, Peter, and tell me how life in Germany compares with your last posting in Sabratha (Libya)”. I would have followed him to hell and back.
